History of Berlin: Chronological Hub

Berlin's history is defined by rapid transformations from a medieval trading post to a Royal Residence, an Imperial capital, a divided Cold War focal point, and the seat of the reunified German state.

Major Historical Eras

Foundation and Rise of the Hohenzollerns (1237–1701)

Berlin was founded as twin settlements, Cölln (1237) and Berlin (1244). The Hohenzollern dynasty established its residency in 1415, eventually crushing local merchant autonomy in 1448. The 1685 Edict of Potsdam invited 6,000 Huguenot refugees, providing the human capital for the city's early industrialization.

Prussia and the German Empire (1701–1918)

The coronation of Frederick I in 1701 established Berlin as a royal capital. Under Frederick the Great (1740–1786), it became an Enlightenment center. The 1871 proclamation of the German Empire in Versailles moved the political center of gravity permanently to Berlin.
