Woodworking Planning: Moisture and Movement

The most common failure in fine furniture is not structural collapse under load, but self-destruction due to restricted seasonal movement. Wood is a hygroscopic polymer; it expands and contracts as it exchanges moisture with the environment. Successful planning requires calculating these changes before the first cut is made.

1. Moisture Content (MC%) and Acclimation

Before milling, you must know the state of your stock.

1.1 The Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC)

EMC is the point where wood neither gains nor loses moisture for a given relative humidity (RH) and temperature. In a typical climate-controlled home (70°F, 40% RH), the EMC is roughly 6-8%.

1.2 Milling in Stages

Internal stresses are relieved as you remove material.

  1. Rough Mill: Plane and joint to within 1/8" of final thickness.
  2. Rest: Let the boards sit for 24-48 hours. They may cup or bow slightly as new moisture gradients reach the center.
  3. Final Mill: Take the final passes to reach your target dimensions.

2. The Mathematics of Movement

Wood moves significantly more across the grain (tangential and radial) than along the grain (longitudinal). Longitudinal movement is usually negligible (<0.1\%).

2.1 Shrinkage Coefficients

Every species has a specific coefficient for Radial (R) and Tangential (T) shrinkage. Tangential (parallel to growth rings) is typically twice as high as Radial (perpendicular to rings).

2.2 Calculating the Change (\Delta D)

To calculate how much a 30" wide tabletop will move between a humid summer (12% MC) and a dry winter (6% MC):

\Delta D = D_i \times C_t \times (\Delta MC)

Where:* D_i: Initial width (30")

Result:30 \times 0.003 \times 6 = 0.54". Your tabletop will grow or shrink by over half an inch. If your joinery doesn't allow for this, the top will crack or the base will be torn apart.

3.1 Tabletop Fastening

Never glue or screw a solid wood top directly to a base frame.

3.2 Breadboard Ends

A classic technique to keep a wide top flat while allowing movement.

3.3 Floating Panels

In frame-and-panel construction (doors, cabinet sides), the central panel must "float" in the grooves of the stiles and rails.
