Van Water Systems: Hydraulic Engineering

A van water system must deliver pressurized, potable water while preventing leaks caused by vibration and thermal expansion.

1. Pump Specifications and Hydraulics

Most vans use a 12V on-demand diaphragm pump.

* **Standard Spec:** 3.0 GPM (Gallons Per Minute) at 55 PSI.

* **Accumulator Tanks:** Mandatory for smooth flow. A 24oz accumulator (e.g. Seaflo) pressurized to 2-3 PSI below the pump's "cut-in" pressure prevents "pump cycling" and reduces electrical noise.

* **Concrete Detail:** Use **Flexible Reinforced Braided Tubing** for at least 18" on both sides of the pump. Hard-plumbing PEX directly to the pump will transmit vibrations through the chassis, resulting in 70dB+ noise levels.

2. Plumbing Materials: PEX-A vs. PEX-B

* **PEX-A (Expansion):** Superior for vans. Uses an expansion tool to create a "memory" fit. It is more flexible and less prone to kinking.

* **PEX-B (Crimp):** Easier to find in hardware stores. Requires copper crimp rings or stainless steel clamps. **Warning:** Crimp joints can vibrate loose over thousands of road miles; check annually.

3. Filtration and Purification Train

For total autonomy, the system must handle "wild" water sources:

| Stage | Filter Type | Specification | Target |

| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |

| **1 (Sediment)**| Pleated Paper | 5-10 Micron | Sand, Silt, Rust |

| **2 (Carbon)** | Carbon Block | 0.5 - 5 Micron | Chlorine, VOCs, Taste |

| **3 (Micro)** | Hollow Fiber | **0.1 Micron Absolute** | Bacteria, Giardia |

| **4 (UV)** | UV-C LED | 254nm Wavelength | Viruses (DNA/RNA destruction) |

**Concrete Example:** The **Sawyer Squeeze** (0.1 micron) can be integrated into the main fill line. For viral protection, the **Acuva Eco-NX Silver** (12V UV-C) provides a 99.99% kill rate at 1.0 GPM flow.

4. Winterization and Thermal Protection

* **Placement:** Keep water lines and tanks *inside* the insulated envelope (e.g. under the bed) rather than under-mounted.

* **Heating:** Use 12V heat pads (approx. 50W each) with a built-in thermostat that activates at 45°F.

* **Drainage:** Install a low-point drain for total system evacuation if the van will be stored in sub-freezing temperatures.
