In any year where the withdrawal rate falls below the lower guardrail, raise spending by 10%. This ensures you actually enjoy your money when the portfolio is thriving, rather than hoarding indefinitely.
Cap: Guyton-Klinger originally capped raises — you never spend more than 20% above your initial inflation-adjusted amount. This prevents lifestyle inflation that becomes hard to reverse.

Key observation: The two spending cuts totaled $12,443/year — about $1,000/month reduction at the worst point. Uncomfortable but survivable, especially with Social Security providing a stable floor. Without guardrails, maintaining $63,650 spending through the downturn would have depleted the portfolio years earlier.
Michael Kitces and Wade Pfau refined the guardrails concept with an important asymmetry: spending increases should be permanent ratchets, not temporary bumps.
The standard Guyton-Klinger system raises spending when the lower guardrail is hit but can also cut it back later. Ratcheting says: if your portfolio has grown enough that your withdrawal rate dropped to 3.5%, your portfolio is almost certainly safe at a higher spending level. Lock in the gain.
Example: You started spending $50,000 from a $1M portfolio (5%). After 8 years the portfolio has grown to $1.5M. Your withdrawal rate (now ~$56K after inflation adjustments) is only 3.7% — below the 3.5% trigger isn't hit yet. If the portfolio reaches $1.6M, making the rate ~3.5%, you ratchet up to $80,000 (5% of $1.6M). This $80,000 becomes your new baseline.
The psychological benefit is substantial: you can genuinely improve your lifestyle rather than perpetually spending less than you can afford.

Separate essential from discretionary. If your income floor (Social Security, pension) covers necessities, guardrail cuts only affect discretionary spending. You're cutting travel, not food. Frame it that way.
Remember that cuts are temporary. In the 20-year example above, the spending cuts lasted 2 years before recovery began. The median bear market lasts 14 months. The system is designed to bend, not break.
