Modern business process management (BPM) focuses on the transition from static documentation to executable models using the BPMN 2.0 standard, validated and enhanced by Process Mining from system event logs.

Process Mining bridges the gap between the "perceived" process (BPMN model) and the "actual" process (recorded in system logs). It relies on the extraction of Event Logs.

The Anatomy of an Event Log

At a minimum, an event log must contain:

  1. Case ID: A unique identifier for a specific process instance (e.g., Order Number).
  2. Activity Name: The specific step performed (e.g., "Invoice Generated").
  3. Timestamp: When the event occurred (used for bottleneck analysis).

The IEEE standard for these logs is XES (eXtensible Event Stream), a XML-based format that supports attributes for resources (who did it) and data (values involved).

  1. Model: Design the "To-Be" process in BPMN 2.0, defining specific Service Tasks for automation.
  2. Execute: Deploy the model to a BPM engine.
  3. Extract: Pull event logs from the engine’s history tables or underlying ERP/WMS databases.
  4. Analyze: Use process mining tools (e.g., Celonis, ProM, or PM4Py) to run conformance checks.
  5. Optimize: Identify "shadow processes" (steps taken that aren't in the model) and update the BPMN to reflect reality or enforce compliance.
